Artist profile; Claude Monet

Claude Monet was born November 14, 1840, and later died from lung cancer on December 5, 1926, he was 86 years old. Monet was a leader of the art movement and period known as impressionism, which wasn't an unintentional title for the movement. He’s known for his paintings of landscapes and nature scenes. Monet's artistic talent was evident from an early age, Monet's first success as an artist was when he was just 15 years old. Enjoy it painting outside and painting the same scene at different times of day to capture different lighting and reflections cast. Monet attempted suicide at the age of 28 years old. He suffered from cataracts. Cataracts are a disease of the eyes. Monet8s cataracts seem to have left a mark on some of his later works. As the disease had distorting the light and reduced the capacity to perceive blues and purples. It is also noted that the painter could distinguish details less which impacted the finesse of his breath strokes, money is quoted saying his bad eyesight meant that everything he saw was through a fog. Reflections are commonly detected in my nasal work such as water lilies, water lily pond, and sunrise. Known for his tendency towards stubbornness, Monet would attack his canvases when angry. It was commented at the time that he destroyed canvases in his quest for perfection. The drive for perfection is echoed in the fact that he created 250 water lilies paintings in 30 years. His stubbornness can also be seen as he did continue to paint and refused to be operated on his cataracts. Understandably any surgical intervention at the time carried a real risk of permanent blindness, which the artist would not have been able to withstand. The best example of how his poor eyesight changed his art is in 1922 the Japanese bridge, he uses warm colours rich red vibrant yellow eyes as by the time this was painted it is said he could no longer make out the colour of his tubes of paint, he was forced to rely on memory and in the order in which he stored them. By 1923 he was almost completely blind and finally gave in to the pressure to go under the knife only on his right eye. It is said that Monet's life was marred by tragedy. Despite his popularity growing he was often plagued with financial hardship. In 1868 shortly after the birth of his first son, he grew increasingly exasperated at his economic situation. Monet is arguably one of the most talked about artists and there is a multitude of books and websites dedicated to the artist.
