Art History; Contemporary Art Summary.

Contemporary art is the term used to define art made in the present day, however, the date varies greatly between art historians, galleries and museums alike.

Some believe that the Contemporary art movement is the art produced since the second half of the 20th century. The metropolitan museum of art in New York has a contemporary and modern art collection dating from 1890 to the present day, the Institute of contemporary art in London founded in 1947 contains art from that year and onwards, whereas the Museum of Contemporary Art in New York has chosen a later date of 1977 and onwards, then there is the Tate Museum of Contemporary Art which has contemporary art of the past 10 years using a rolling basis to refresh their Contemporary art collection.  On the other hand, nearly all art historians, galleries and museums can agree contemporary art is made by an artist that is still alive and still making works.

Contemporary art is often about ideas and concerns rather than solely VS the aesthetics of the work. Artists often try different ways of experimenting with ideas and materials. However, the main idea remains that artists are living and made today so that it reflects the variety of issues that shape the changing world. Contemporary artists' work can be influenced by a culturally diverse and technologically advancing world. Art historians set the start date of Contemporary art in the 1960s with the emergence of the PopArt movement as it represents a radical break from modernism. Contemporary art follows the art movement known as Modern art. Morden art is a broad term used to define artworks produced between the 1850s and 1945.
