Apple Alone (2018)

This artwork is a still life of a single apple.

A pencil illustration, mounted and framed.

WHAT IS STILL LIFE?

Still, life is one of the subject types of Western art. It is a principle practised using subject matter that does not move. Still life practice can be a painting or sculpture but the subject which is being observed must be anything that does not move or is dead. This includes all kinds of man-made or natural objects. Popular objects include but are not limited to, cut flowers, fruit, vegetables and wine. Still life can be a celebration of material enjoyments such as food and wine, or often a warning of the temporariness of these pleasures and the brevity of human life (memento mori). Furthermore, academically still life is fifth after history painting, portraiture, genre painting (scenes of everyday life) and landscape. More about still life can be found on multiple gallery and museum websites.

WHY A SOLO APPLE?

The image of the apple can signify love, wisdom, and death. Within the context of Christianity, it means temptation and original sin. In Norse mythology, as in Greek, apples grant immortality. The apple is also associated (like other fruits and flowers) with a woman's anatomy. This flows with the overall themes of my work.
